About us
The research activity in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) originated in 2009 with the foundation of the PAVIS (Pattern Analysis and Computer Vision) research unit. It was established by Vittorio Murino, who coordinated the unit until 2019. Following the coordination of Alessio Del Bue (2019–2025), Vittorio Murino resumed the leadership of the unit in 2026, currently serving as its Principal Investigator. Since its inception, PAVIS has been dedicated to developing an AI infrastructure aimed at understanding physical space and human behaviours within it.
Building upon this extensive experience, the AI FOR GOOD (AIGO) research group was established in October 2024. The group's current mission is to translate the expertise consolidated within PAVIS to real-world challenges, with a specific focus on managing imperfect data—information that is often unlabelled, noisy, limited, or biased.
Today, AIGO utilizes state-of-the-art multimodal models and Foundation Models to interpret complex signals from various modalities, including video, audio, and language. Through the integration of specialized components known as Adapters, the group develops efficient and scalable AI solutions for high-impact sectors such as healthcare, assisted living, and industrial inspection.
